As the continuous feedback we get demonstrates, it is for good reason that the acclaimed Constable Care program has achieved widespread recognition, including the 2004, 2005 and 2006 Australian Crime and Violence Prevention Awards.

“On behalf of our community I would like to thank Constable Care for visiting our school on Monday and conveying the important message – ‘It’s OK to Tell’. The puppets had a big impact on our children. A student from our class made a disclosure about an untenable situation at home which she kept secret for too long. By telling her two teachers it has made a huge difference to her already. The look of relief on her face today and the difference in her demeanour has been a wonderful experience for the share teacher and I. Between the three of us, we have worked out some strategies for her to use in dealing with her home issues. When she was talking to us she kept saying ‘no one will believe me’ if she tried to confide in any other family members. If we have saved one child from potential suicide, and she tells us she has already thought about it on three occasions, the program was worth it. Thank you so much. You all deserve a gold medal.”

“Thank you for coming to our school to perform for us. I learned lots of ways to tell a bully to be nice and to stop. But my favourite bit was where Kate told Ethan about the difference between telling and dobbing. The difference between telling is if you need help you can tell a teacher and dobbing is trying to get someone into trouble.”

“To my mind the work Constable Care does plays a vital role among ours and other Indigenous communities in raising issues such as school attendance, how to handle bullying, alcohol and drug abuse and stepping back from people doing the wrong thing. It presents the messages in a fun way that our kids immediately respond to. Story telling is a huge part of our culture and with the drama and the puppets, it’s a fantastic way of bringing the messages home to the kids in a way that I know stays with them for a long time. We obviously have a lot of challenges out here in Halls Creek, but for the last two years, it feels like we are beginning to get things moving in the right direction. Constable Care is one of a few outside groups that are working with our kids on these issues and it is playing a really important role in helping us move forward in a positive way. My only complaint is I wish Constable Care could get out to us more often!”
